Get into the spirit of Valentine’s a few days early by attending the museum’s annual Victorian Valentine’s Gala on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018. It is an evening of piano music, food and drink that runs from 4-8 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person and all proceeds benefit the museum. Tickets are available at the Chamber of Commerce office, City Hall and from museum board members. Tickets will also be available at the door.
Sunday, Nov. 6 from 2-4 p.m. the Moody Museum will once again play host to the city’s Veterans Day observance. All local veterans are invited to participate by attending and by making shadowboxes in which they can tell the story of their military service. Special honorees this year will be the Vietnam veterans since this is the 50th anniversary of the start of that conflict. The guest speaker will be Charles Nowlin, a Taylor High graduate, who was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam.
The museum will loan shadowboxes to any veteran or their family who would like to put one on display that afternoon. They can be picked up at the museum during regular hours (2-5 Friday and Sunday) in the weeks prior to the event.
The next big event for the museum will be a celebration of the Governor’s birthday in June. For the third year it will be the culmination of a “pounding” to raise much-needed food for the local Shepherd’s Heart Food Pantry.
Poundings were commonplace in Governor Moody’s time and consisted of friends and family bringing food to stock the pantry of a newlywed couple. Gov. Moody and his bride, Mildred, benefitted from one hosted by the East Texas Chamber of Commerce to stock the pantry of the Governor’s Mansion in 1927 when Moody took office.
